Whew… Proud of my first half marathon!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on March 22, 2009 by Passion Runner

My NIKE Sportband was accurate up until after 13km. It shows that I was running at a fairly constant pace until I hit my wall when I reached 13km… 16km is the farthest that I’ve actually run before. This being my first 21k… I wanted to enjoy the experience. Each and every painful, tiring, step of the way and all 2hrs 41minutes and 6 seconds of it.

Congrats to everyone who ran! I’ll post pictures and more stories soon. Time for me to get some sleep…

I need to reward myself… or at least have a break

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on October 8, 2008 by Passion Runner

I’m not sure if I’m entitled to a reward but I feel I should do something right after my final exam for succession tomorrow. Should I do a run? Or should I buy something for myself? Or should I go out and see a movie? Get a massage? Or what… what do you think? :)

Recap of August

August Training Calender

Looking back at the month of August, I realize that I only stuck to my training schedule for the first week. The week after, something went wrong and BAM! My training schedule went to shambles… In sum, I had missed a total of 7 runs/training sessions for a grand total of P3,500 (P500/day penalty). Well, the money will still go to me but it will be “unavailable” for me to use. As soon as I get it, I’ll already set it aside. Perhpas it would also serve as a good motivation to run if I release it only upon reaching 1,000km.

The blocks in blue represent late afternoon or evening runs while the yellow blocks represent morning runs. From the training calendar, it seems that towards the end of the month, I shifted to training more at night rather than my usual mornings.

Ideally and following my program, I am only allowed one rest day and it should either be before and/or after a race.

SEPTEMBER, here I come! :D

Busy busy busy

I think this is the longest I’ve gone without posting… 6 days. The past week has been very hectic for me. Classes have already started and it seems as if my “summer bum” days are over. It’s back to the hustle and bustle of a law student’s life.

First off, my schedule is crazy. There is just too much free time in between. Imagine, on some days, my classes start at 5pm and end at 9 in the evening. On other days, I start a 8am and end by 11am but the next class would be from 6-8pm. I never thought that 7 hour breaks were possible!

Right now, my problem is whether I’d still have time to train at ULTRA or run altogether. It was easy for me to run all summer since I made sure that I wouldn’t do anything… but now, it’s different. With a really hectic schedule and heavy study load, everything will change.

The good thing about my schedule is that on days that I train at ULTRA, my classes start later in the afternoon, and on days that I do my tempo and long runs, are days that I get out at 4pm. The factor that changes everything is the amount of time I need to read my material and physical exhaustion. Sometimes, for me at least, mental exhaustion is more taxing than physical exhaustion. When your brain is tired, it just shuts itself down, refusing to accept anything anymore.

Take for example this week. Our classes started last Tuesday. As soon as I got home later that evening, I found myself asleep by 9:30pm. I woke up at 4am the following day for training and stayed in school the entire day just waiting for my next class at 5pm. I was asleep by 10:30pm and spent most of my day trying to read my assigned material. As evening came, I did my 5km run. It was Friday and I had to wake up extra early if I wanted to train since my class starts at 8am.

With such a tight schedule, I couldn’t even find time to post anything new. Sorry to everyone who frequented the site, only to see the same postings. I’ll try to make up :)

Blisters! Argh!

Posted in Uncategorized on May 25, 2008 by Passion Runner

The past 3 races, I’ve started to suffer from blisters. I guess it’s due to all the sweating that goes on with my new found pace and all (naks! haha! :P ). I mean, it really really is a bummer to get blisters. First they’re painful. Second, they take a while to heal. Third, they’re annoying, especially that skin bubble.

Apparently, blisters occur when there is too much friction on your skin. When your skin rubs too much on surface. In the case of runners, with the soles of the shoe.

Factors that contribute to blisters are loose or tight shoes or  wet socks. In my case, the latter.

There are different methods to treating blisters. In extreme blister cases, you’d have to drain them but puncturing them with a sterilized needle or pin, and letting the fluid go out. If they’re small, you don’t really need to do anything.
